Hosting of artists at the Barbur Gallery

Barbur gallery is happy to announce for the third time the opening of the annual artists residency program Barbur B&B .

This year 30 artists and artist groups were invited to sojourn at the gallery, each one for one day, during the month of July.

The program starts on the Saturday evening, 01.07, and will continue until 31.07.

Every day and night (except Shabbats) a different artist or artists’ group will stay at the gallery, sleeping, eating, working, performing, and meeting people.

The public is invited to visit the gallery, meet the artists, talk on the works and on life.

The residency participants come from various fields of art — plastic arts, music, dance. theater, performance, poetry, urban arts and critical writing.

Mika Nesher

Mika Nesher is an artist and writer currently starting her MFA at the New School, NY.

Most recently she has curated alongside Merav Kamel Bianca Eshel Gershuni & Oree Holban’s joint exhibition Slowland, Barbur Gallery, Jerusalem (2017).

For this coming residency she will be collaborating with the artist Frances Fox under their collective’s name: “Night Circus.” Fox studied drawing at Falmouth College of Art and Design, England. She has also received a Higher Education Certificate from Camberwell College of Art and Design in 2014. She is currently working with Tamar Raban’s Performance Art Ensemble, Bemat Maitzag in Tel Aviv. 

The work will feature the artist Michal Elbee, alongside the performers: Hila Gluskions, Yael Mor, Haim Livac, Danielle Kaganov, Yom Omer, Sophia Ciccone, and Dean Ben-Uri.

Maya Aruch, 1988, BFA graduated at the Fine Art department at the Bezalel academy of art and design.

Works in the fields of drawing, sculpture and installation.

Exhibited in places in Israel and Europe: the 6th biannual for drawing in Barbur gallery, Jerusalem, HEP project in Akka, Finland, Friday Exit gallery in Vienna, Austria and What The Shop gallery in Vienna, Austria.

Lives and works in Tel Aviv.

Aniam Dery

Aniam Dery is an installation, video and performance artists, was born in Bat-Yam, currently living and working in Jerusalem. Aniam is interested in the meeting point of the different cultures and the crux of intersecting the physical and concrete with the elusive and spiritual. Her work deals with the concept of “ceremony” and the interaction between the spectator and the artistic act, usually through movement and motion.

His images and artistic manipulations are allegorical. Though with humor, his allegories are existential, sexual and masculine, searching for their place,  potency and satisfaction. Patricia O’Donovan

Patricia O’Donovan is a puppeteer, director, playwright, performer, designer and teacher.

Patricia was born in Argentina and lives in Israel since 1978.  In Buenos Aires she was member of one of the first groups of Shadow Theater in Latin America: “Transparencias”. In 1970 she got her degree in Zoology from the National University of Buenos Aires. In Jerusalem she graduated from the School for Visual Theater (1989), and got her doctorate in Zoology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (PhD, 1988). As well she holds a Postgraduate Degree in Theater Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1990)

Patricia is one of the leading puppeteers in Israel. Her shows are invited to major puppet theater festivals around the world, and tour extensively throughout Israel and Europe, where Patricia performs in Hebrew, English, Spanish, French and German. Her show ‘A Touch of Light’ (נקודת אור/ Louis L’Enfant de la Nuit, Lichtschimmer), created in 1994 and produced by the Train Theater of Jerusalem has performed more than 3000 times in France alone, and continues to be acclaimed by the public and critics until today.

From 2007 until 2010 she acted as Head of UNIMA-Israel, the International Association of Puppet Theater. Patricia is a pioneer of Science-Theater in Israel, where over the years she has combined her knowledge of the two fields. Working with the Boomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem since its inception in 1992, Patricia has been promoting the understanding of science through theater in dozens of shows and exhibitions.

Together with a full schedule as a performer and director Patricia gives workshops, individual tutoring and teaches theater at major academic institutions in Jerusalem.

Since October 2015 she directs and manages the AMBULO Company dedicated to Puppet, Object and Shadow Theater performances for children and adults.

Has exhibited her works in several group exhibitions, and in a solo exhibition at the Artists Studios gallery in Tel-Aviv.

Netaly explores movement, matter, physics and emotions through the medioms of sculpture, drawing, writing and music.

Flora Deborah, born in France in 1984 is an MFA student at Bezalel Academy of the arts in Tel Aviv. Based in between countries she has shown works in London, Milan and Tel Aviv.

Flora makes interdisciplinary work that investigates being, the environment, ecology and internal identity, working across sculpture, photography, video and installation.

Notable exhibitions to date include Cramum prize, Saatchi Gallery and Photofusion.

Menachem Roth

Menachem Roth was born in Jerusalem, 1975, to a Jewish Ultra-Orthodox family. Roth left the Hassidic society at the age of 18. His work derives from his biography and describes his ambivalent relationship with the world he left.

In 2005 he graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem (B.F.A), and continued to his M.F.A. at the KHM – Academy of Media Arts Cologne, Germany (2008). He received several scholarships and awards including: The Jerusalem Film & Television Fund (2015), DAAD-Preis für ausländische Studierende, Cologne (2007), Ehud Elchanani Award for Graduate with Honors, Bazalel Academy of Art (2005), American Israel Cultural Foundation (2004), Gesher – The Israeli Multicultural Film Foundation (2004).

Roth’s work addresses Jewish identity, Yiddish, Holocaust representations, Feminism and critical view upon the Ultra-Orthodox society. His most prominent work, Persued (2012), is a documentary in which Roth confronts the man who sexually abused him while attending an ultra-Orthodox boarding school. It was screened in various film festivals all around the globe and in many television stations in Israel and other countries, and received a great deal of media attention and an outstanding amount of personal reactions from viewers.

Menachem Roth is working and living in Jerusalem with his partner and their two Yiddish-speaking daughters. He is a cinema teacher at the Charles E. Smith Jerusalem High School of Arts and teaches at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. His next project depicts the life of a Forced-Ultra-Orthodox group (i.e. individuals who are unable to leave the Ultra-Orthodox society).

Assaf Hinden

The Sala-Manca Group is a group of independent Jerusalem-based artists that creates in different fields: performance, video, installation & new media since 2000. Sala-manca’s works deal with poetics of translation (cultural, mediatic and social), with textual, urban and net contexts and with the tensions between low tech and high tech aesthetics, as well as social and political issues. The SALA-MANCA GROUP is Lea Mauas and Diego Rotman, artists born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who live and work in Jerusalem.

Sal-Manca published Hearat Shulaym – (Note in the Margin): Independent
Quarterly for Contemporary Art and Literature (2001-2007), curated and produced
Heara events – multidisciplinary events organized in an independent way with no
commercial or official sponsors, between other projects. In 2009 the founded
the Mamuta Art and Media Center which run at the Daniela Passal’s house between 2009-2012 and in Hansen House since November 2013.

Mamuta  is a center for artistic creation, encounters, research, and display
of art. The Center, is an artist’s run space, comprised of artists’ workspaces; video, sound, and electronics labs; a wood, metal, and plastics workshop and an artist in residence
apartment. The goal of the project is to advance art projects and to create a
framework for artists from different media, as well as curators, architects, designers,
and researchers, who wish to create in the spirit of cooperation, dialogue, and
technological innovation.  The project is dedicated to creating conditions for
developing an active community of artists, allowing for personal development
alongside collaborative work, through an engagement with the place and time.

Renana aldor

Renana Aldor, born 1988, Jerusalem. Artist, in the field of Animation, Video and Installation. Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from the Screen Based Arts Department, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, 2015. Her work was showcased in different Festivals, such as – ‘The 19th Japan Media Arts Festival’ Jury selection, Tokyo, Japan (2016), and the ‘33rd Jerusalem Film Festival’ (2016). Her film ‘La femme qui cherche’ was awarded with production funding from ‘The New Fund for Cinema and Television’ (2015). Aldor is also a member of the ‘Aesthetics and Bias’ project between Bezalel and four Academies in Poland (2014-2017), and part of ‘The Underground Academy’ residence program, at the Mamuta Art and Media Center, Jerusalem (2017).

Roni Doron

Born in 1989, Kibbutz Ma’abarot. Graduated from the fine arts department of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.

Working mainly with painting, printing, sculpting and installation. Settels mostly in the space between things, in the inconvenience that makes you feel. In the movement to release the neck that doesn’t really releases. Examining the borders of the mediums in aspiration to scratch also where there’s no bite. How to do so that everyone will feel that a sheet of paper isn’t flat.

Yasmin Caspin,

Born in 1988 at Kibbutz Ginegar

Graduate Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in 2016, currently living and working in Jerusalem.

Sculpture first of all, working in the range between craft to silversmiths, enjoying the most daily, one-time-use, lightweight materials.

I am interested in how climate, culture, and history resonate in daily life as if by accident. I believe that art allows us to experience duality in the world while letting our mind wander between the unexpected and the familiar, reminding us that we are human.
